RUBBER GRADES & SPECIFICATIONS

Resources / Rubber Grades & Specifications

Natural Rubber (Polyisoprene)

Natural rubber is found as internal fluids of many plants & trees. It has excellent mechanical properties i.e. impact strength, resilience, tensile strength, abrasion resistance, tear resistance and electrical insulation. Natural Rubber is usually used for applications where the highest physical properties are required, i.e. tyres, gaskets, seals, Anti vibration pads, electrical components, expansion bellows, conveyor belts, etc. Natural Rubber is not recommended for Chemical resistance, Fuels, Oils & Solvents.

Neoprene (Polychloroprene-CR)

Neoprene was created in 1930 by DuPont which has moderate resistance to oils and gasoline. Neoprene is a polymer of chloroprene and is considered a general or all-purpose rubber having varieties like W & GN series. It features good flame resistance, moderate exposure to ozone, sunlight and has very good resistance to abrasion, flex cracking, alkalis and acids, greases, solvents, petroleum oils, animal and vegetable oils. However, it has poor resistance to aromatic and oxygenated solvents and limited flexibility at low temperatures. Certain compounds of neoprene are flame retardant and will not support combustion Neoprene is generally considered an excellent all-purpose elastomer. Common applications include Diaphragms, Bellows, O-Rings, Sheets, tank linings, Gaskets and seals, and many more standard products.

Nitrile - Buna-N – NBR (Acrylonitrile-Butadiene)

Nitrile, or Buna-N, is a copolymer of butadiene and acrylonitrile and has excellent resistance to oil, gasoline, solvents, mineral and vegetable oils, hydraulic fluid, and fuels. Its resistance to alkalis and acids increases as the nitrile polymer content of the compound increases. Nitrile is poor resistance to ketones, chlorinated hydrocarbons, and nitro hydrocarbons, oxygenated solvents. Tear resistance is inferior to that of natural rubber and electrical insulation is lower. However, it has a higher tensile and elongations. Most commonly used O-Rings are made from Nitrile. It is also widely used with hydraulic fluid and alcohol applications. Nitrile is commonly used for industrial and automotive applications, in products such as fuel and oil handling hoses, oil seals, grommets, fluid seals, rollers, vibration Pads, Fuel Bladders, Surge Tank Bladders, Water hammer membranes etc.

EPDM (Ethylene-Propylene-Diene-Monomer)

EPDM is designed and well known for its excellent ozone, UV exposure, weather and aging resistance. There are two basic types of EP rubber available in today's market—EPR and EPDM. EPR is a copolymer of ethylene and propylene, while EPDM is a terpolymer combining ethylene, propylene and a diene monomer. It also has excellent water and steam resistance, maintains its flexibility at low temperatures, features excellent resistance to alkalis, acids and oxygenated solvents. It is not recommended for resistance to oil, gasoline and hydrocarbon solvents. EPDM is one of the most widely used synthetic rubbers in many static and dynamic applications. EPDM is used extensively in outdoor applications where weather and water resistance is required. Most common applications are Gaskets, Diaphragms, outdoor seals, Exterior Auto components, Beadings Brake systems etc.

BUTYL

Butyl is copolymer of isobutylene with small amounts of isoprene and is Impermeable to most common gasses and air retention along with good flex properties, High damping capabilities resistant to oxygenated solvents, Alkalis, and High abrasion quality. It has good tensile and tear strength, ozone resistance etc. Useful applications ARE Diaphragms, Vacuum seals, hydraulics applications, Tubes, Pond liners, Tank Liners, Pharma Products like Stoppers, grommets, Plugs, Caps etc.

HYPALON (CSM)

Hypalon is a trademark of Dupont Performance Elastomers for chloro-sulfonated synthetic rubber (CSM) noted for its resistance to chemicals, temperature extremes, and ultraviolet light., Along with PVC, CSM is one of the most common materials used to make inflatable boats and Coated Fabrics. It is also used in roofing materials and as a surface coat material on fabrics owing to its radar-transparent quality. Hypalon is also used in the construction of the decking of modern snowshoes, replacing neoprene as a lighter, stronger alternative. In addition to its unique UV stability, Hypalon is known for its ruggedness. Although many thermoplastic materials can be made to be very rugged, properly formulated Hypalon combines the flexibility of rubber with extreme ruggedness. This makes it an ideal material for severe environments such as mining applications. Some formulations of Hypalon are so tough that they were used for gaskets and seals that experience extreme pressures during their service life. Marine products are also recommended in Hypalon for its various strong properties.

SPECIFIC GRAVITY FROM 1.10 TO 1.80 GM/CM2
HARDNESS RANGE FROM 40 TO 80 o SHORE-A
TENSILE STRENGTH UPTO 180 KG/CM2
ELONGATION UPTO 500 %

Silicone (Polysiloxane)

Silicone rubber is a semi-organic synthetic made from sand and alkyl. Silicone has a broad temperature range and is generally odourless / non-toxic. Silicone offers excellent resistance to high temperatures, ozone, oxygen, UV light, moisture, and fungus. Silicone also has excellent vibration damping and maintains its dielectric strength. It has low compression set and offers good fatigue resistance, flex resistance, and elongation. However, it is not recommended for applications that require abrasion resistance, tear and cut resistance and high tensile strength. It is not recommended for resistance to oil, gasoline, solvents, alkalis and acids. However, most common applications are in Food and Pharma Industry due to its Non-toxicity. Products like food Container Rings and gaskets, Nebulisers seals, Oven seal gaskets, cover bellows etc are recommended in Silicone.

Viton (Fluoroelastomer-FKM)

Viton FKM is DuPont-Dow Elastomer’s trade name for fluorocarbon elastomers. Viton is a co-polymer of Vinylidene Fluoride and Hexa Fluoropropylene. It is a high performance and long-term reliability elastomer in very harsh and corrosive environments. Viton responds very well with resistance to ozone, high temperatures, oxygen, mineral oil, synthetic hydraulic fluids, fuels, aromatics and many organic solvents and chemicals Its resistance to heat aging and a broad range of fuels, solvents and chemicals makes it ideal for many demanding aerospace, automotive and industrial applications. flame retardant than hydrocarbon rubbers. Fluoroelastomers have poor resistance to ketones, esters, ethers, amines and aqueous bases. Applications of Viton is very extensive due to its higher properties and versatility for uses in Petrochemicals, Aerospace, Marine, Nuclear Industries.
